Jeff, a cattle farmer from near Port Hedland WA was looking for a cost-effective option for bulk storage of barley to use as grain feed for livestock. Previously, he’d stored corn in grain bags but the Cockatoo’s, “were just chewing holes wherever there was a crease.”
He needed a secure and cost-effective way to store 1000T of barley for the next 6 months as feed for his livestock. For his 15m Width x 55m Length Bunker, Jeff purchased a 180gsm Polyethylene ground sheet and 610gsm PVC top tarp for cover. Jeff opted to include fumigation zips in his top tarp to give quick and easy access points for fumigators.

Two telehandlers were used to inload the barley, necking the ends of the tarp and pulling it over the top of the bunker pile. Jeff said it “went really well” and it was a very safe procedure as “no one even needed to climb up over the pile, the telehandlers did it all”.
As well as being more secure, the new method of storage ended up being far more affordable than using grain bags, especially in the long-term.
“When you add up all the costs of bag storage, including the hire of bagging machines, compared to bunker storage, with bunkers you are well ahead.”
