Providing shade for your livestock is important to protect them from heat exhaustion during the Australian summer months. While sheep, cattle and other livestock have ability to cope with environmental stress, the combination of high temperature and humidity, with high levels of solar radiation and minimal airflow, can lead to increased levels of stress and exceed the animals’ ability to dissipate body heat.
Excessive heat load in feedlot sheep or other livestock can lead to significant production losses, welfare issues, and even death. Providing shade is one strategy that is commonly used to reduce the impact of intense heat conditions on your flock.
