Dam liners are the most trustworthy method used in the prevention of water seepage and potential leaks in dams. If this is your first time using dam liners, here are a few factors to help decide wisely.
Most of the dam liners sold in the market are made from a heavy-duty plastic material that has a rot resistant feature. What does this mean? The plastic component can withstand submersion in water and will not decay. Dams lined with PE and rubber based lining materials have a service life of approximately 40 years or more, however, the integrity of dam liners can be decreased due to degradation brought by harmful rays of the sun with possible damage (poor preparation of surfaces or wear and tear).
Dam liners can provide long years of service if proper installation is carried out. PE liners made from high-grade material are expected to last at least 10 years, but can be exposed to deterioration from UV rays. If you want to decrease UV exposure, better cover dam liners with soil of at least 300 mm. This common practice has been proven to extend the serviceable life of the liners. Another way to protect dam liners from possible damage is by installing a fence around the dam or cover with soil, especially if animals have a tendency to walk on these liners. Don’t forget to remove rocks, roots and other sharp objects that are lying underneath the surfaces of dam liners. If you cannot prevent these hazards from causing tears or holes, then, put underlay material like geotextile.
The material cost of dam liners is another important factor to consider. Careful assessment on how much liner material is needed for edging and trench on both sides. You may also take into account the slope of the dam walls. Why? Well, the deeper the dam, expect the dam walls to be a lot steeper and the edging to be wider. So, this simply means you need enough funding to proceed with the installation of dam liners.
Edging is crucial in the installation of dam liners. In most cases, the amount of edging to be done will be based on the design of the dam. However, the standard edging required is at least 1 metre of extra liner around the area. If unsure of the ideal edging, consult an expert in dam design and installation.
The materials that can be used for dam liners do vary. Depending on one’s preference on design, method of application and allocated budget the common types of liner materials include polyethylene (PE) or Polypropylene (PP). Other materials used for dam liners are EDM and butyl-based rubber that has the longest service life of at least 30 to 40 years.
